I don’t know about you, but around the time of seasonal change into the cold darkness I tend to get all sorts of conflicting weirdness in my mind, body and spirit.
I am in fucking love with fall, obviously. Adorning cozy sweaters, drinking hot toasty beverages all day long, reading books, boot shopping. Yes, as much as I am a sun baby, after an exhausting summer of awesomeness I am usually dying for a day of broody dark rain to have just one guilt free seep in (or 7...in a row preferably). Sometimes though, we are still buzzing with summertime expansive, limitless, atmospheric energy and although we’re more than ready to curl up with a book and spend a day soup stewing, it’s difficult to settle into that head space. Something still calls out for you to get out there and do all sorts of shit. So obnoxious. Shut up brain.
How to shift into the lower vibration months seamlessly? These 5 essential oils can totally help your transition from summer fun to autumn chill and on to holiday bonanzas while being serene as fuck.
1. LAVENDER - anti anxiety
Lavender is the keystone of the essential oil kingdom. It is the undisputed ruler of healing. One of lavender's fabulous qualities is its anti-anxiety effect. Lavender can help calm your mind and wisp you away to the fields of Provence, wrapped in linen with a warm breeze dusting your closed eyelids. Try a facial steam bath in the morning. Fill a bowl with hot water, add 3 drops of lavender essential oil, cover with your favourite towel and stick your face in between the two for a deep inhalation treatment. Feel the stress balls in your brain melt away as they are replaced with lavender bubbles of calm.
2. Jasmine - sedative
Jasmine is a mild sedative so it is great for sleepy time. It calms your brain chatter and helps you to not only fall asleep but to stay that way. No waking up with panic induced heart palpitations, followed by a necessary trip to the toilet, now you're thinking about all the things in life you should be doing, hello 4:00am.
By reducing signs of insomnia and sleeplessness, you can go back to your old well-rested, kind, patient, and productive self again. Around the madness of holiday buzz this little wonder is great for adding to a bath and sneaking in a late afternoon nap.
Also, jasmine smells like a menagerie of sensory pleasure. Think Maui at night, warm breeze, intoxicating fragrant flowers mingling with salt water. Fuuuuuuuuuck.
3. Bergamot - relaxing
Bergamot is well known for it’s relaxing, anti-anxiety qualities and for being the secret, unique flavour ingredient in Earl Grey tea. What better way to relax than to make your house smell like a warm cup of tea? Use bergamot oil for a very refreshing and relaxing bath - mix with a carrier oil like almond or avocado before adding to your tub. Or add to an oil diffuser and accidentally fall asleep on the couch. Oops!
4. Neroli - anti depressant
Also known as bitter orange blossom, neroli smells like heaven and also happens to be an anti-depressant. Often on the first slow, rainy days of autumn, there is sudden lag in productivity and social stimulus. This combined with the lack of feeling accomplished or having positive reaffirmation from peers and coworkers can leave you feeling like you're a worthless, lazy shit pile. You’re not. Get over it. Take the day. It’s ok. And put some neroli in your oil diffuser to help with these potential feelings of self loathing. Be here now. Stop to smell the orange flowers.
5. Rose Geranium (pelargonium) - balancing
Rose geranium oil is actually called pelargonium but we call it geranium because some botanist totally fucked up forever ago. It has been cultivated and coveted for ages for its balancing properties. Rose geranium oil has a regulating effect on the nervous system and can help dispel depression, nervous anxiety and fear. Its scent is positive and uplifting, which instantly calms the mind and restores emotional balance. This is why it is used for both acute and chronic anxiety. Adding this oil to your diffuser or to a bath not only will make you and your home smell like a sweet citrusy rose kingdom, but will also help your transition into winter by balancing your conflicting hormones. YAY!
Whatever your situation may be, introducing essential oils into your life can magnificently change the way you approach yourself and the outside world. And even if you don't believe in that hippie dippie shit, they smell fucking amazing and make your house better. So it's a win win situation however you spin it.
Don't be scared of the rain and snow. It's our time to hibernate and get internal. You're a babe. Relax into yourself. Get your essential oil game on lock and make your mind, body and home into a soothing, fragrant palace of balance, calm, and contentment. Winter is here. It ain't so bad, right? I dunno what everybody was all freaking out about.
Happy Holidays! ❄️
